Help others in need

Article written by Sergiu Bumbacea and Filip Popescu M.Sc.

This Holiday season we are encouraging our community to spend more time doing good for others. Technology is a wonderful tool for this, as we show you in our selection below of charitable digital volunteering organisations, online platforms, and apps. You only need a computer, internet access, and some time.

KidsTechWorld is supported by the parent company DigitConstruct (DC). This year, instead of Christmas cards, DC has used the FivetoLife platform to issue donation vouchers for a selection of charities. Once claimed, these donations will be done by DC on behalf of the recipients. Below we are showing you more such examples.

Digital Volunteering

United Nations Volunteers
“The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.”

Crisis Text Line
“Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support for those in crisis. Text 741741 from anywhere in the US to text with a trained Crisis Counselor. Crisis Text Line trains volunteers to support people in crisis. With over 4 million conversations to date, we’re growing quickly, but so is the need.”

Zooniverse
“The Zooniverse is the world’s largest and most popular platform for people-powered research. This research is made possible by volunteers — more than a million people around the world who come together to assist professional researchers. Our goal is to enable research that would not be possible, or practical, otherwise. Zooniverse research results in new discoveries, datasets useful to the wider research community, and many publications.”

DoSomething.org
“As the largest not-for-profit exclusively for young people and social change, DoSomething’s millions of members represent every US area code and 131 countries.Using our digital platform, DoSomething members join our volunteer, social change, and civic action campaigns to make real-world impact on causes they care about. Sorry in advance for the #humblebrag, but here are just a few of our greatest campaigns.”

Charity Online Platforms

Kiva
“More than 1.7 billion people around the world are unbanked and can’t access the financial services they need. Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 in San Francisco, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive.
We do this by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva’s work, students can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care.
By lending as little as $25 on Kiva, you can be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone’s life.
100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes to funding loans.”

Care2
“Our Promise: Welcome to Care2, the world’s largest community for good. Here, you’ll find over 45 million like-minded people working towards progress, kindness, and lasting impact.
Care2 Stands Against: bigots, racists, bullies, science deniers, misogynists, gun lobbyists, xenophobes, the willfully ignorant, animal abusers, frackers, and other mean people. If you find yourself aligning with any of those folks, you can move along, nothing to see here.
Care2 Stands With: humanitarians, animal lovers, feminists, rabble-rousers, nature-buffs, creatives, the naturally curious, and people who really love to do the right thing.
You are our people. You Care. We Care2.”

Free Rice
“As you play Freerice and answer questions right, advertisements appear on your screen. When you see one of these advertisements, you trigger a financial payment to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.
In the game, these payments are represented via grains of rice. The amount of money generated when you see an advertisement can vary, but is roughly equivalent to what the World Food Programme spends to purchase 10 grains of rice.
By playing, you are generating the money that pays for this rice. This money is used for many types of assistance — not just rice — depending on where needs are greatest.”

Sevenly
“Sevenly was founded in 2011 with the mission of raising funding and awareness and followers for the world’s greatest causes. We do that by being Outfitters for World Changers, like you. Our objective is to create and curate the best advocacy apparel, art, and accessories on the planet.
We’re grateful to have contributed over $5 million for hundreds of non-profit partners while creating billions of impressions promoting the epic work they do. Over the years, we’ve stirred up many volunteers who’ve given of their lives to support non-profit work they first learned about from Sevenly campaigns.
People like you have been the key to that impact. You are also the motivation for our small team of staff and volunteers, as well as our fulfillment partner – which employs young adults coming out of the foster care system – and other social good companies that have been inspired into existence by our mission, and now help provide accessories to our cause-themed collections.
God willing, together – we’ll help raise up a generation toward generosity.”

HandUp
“Our Purpose:
HandUp was created to use technology and the power of human relationships to fight poverty and is now part of South Oakland Shelter’s mission to build communities that end homelessness.
What We Do:
HandUp’s charitable giving platform provides nonprofits and donors in the community with a new, simple, and direct way to make an impact on poverty.”

Charity and Support Apps

Be My Eyes
“Be My Eyes is a free mobile app with one main goal: to make the world more accessible for blind and low-vision people. The app connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers and companies from all over the world through a live video call.

Since we launched in January 2015, more than 4,000,000 volunteers have signed up to assist blind and low-vision users. Be My Eyes users can request assistance in over 180 languages making the app the biggest online community for blind and low-vision people as well as one of the largest micro-volunteering platforms in the world! Every day, volunteers sign onto Be My Eyes to lend their sight to blind and low-vision individuals to tackle challenges and solve problems together.”

LotsaHelpingHands
“Lotsa Helping Hands powers online caring communities that help restore health and balance to caregivers’ lives. Our service brings together caregivers and volunteers through online Communities that organize daily life during times of medical crisis or caregiver exhaustion in neighborhoods and communities worldwide. Caregivers benefit from the gifts of much needed help, emotional support, and peace of mind, while volunteers find meaning in giving back to those in need.”

CareFlash
“This is not another patient website that engages loved ones with nonstop updates, well wishes and always asking how they can help – but a complete approach that moves loved ones from sympathy to empathy… enabling them from near and far to more naturally and comfortably rally ’round – extending integrated care and strengthening outlook and peace of mind involving circumstances such as: illness, injury, childbirth, aging, cognitive decline, addiction recovery, grief from a loss.
A Careopolis is entirely (and quickly and easily) created and operated by the family and requires no education or training.
CareFlash also partners with hundreds of providers nationwide – enhancing comprehensive care, reducing caregiver burnout, improving overall wellness.”

7 Cups
“We live in a world where you can be surrounded by people, but still feel lonely, with nobody to turn to when things get rough.
But being heard is an important part of being human. Psychologist, Glen Moriarty saw that there was great power in listening, but he knew not everyone had someone to talk to. He started to wonder. “How can I make being heard a reality for everyone?
“That’s why 7 Cups was born.
Thanks to thousands of volunteer listeners stepping up to lend a friendly ear, 7 Cups is happy to say, “We’re here for you!”
No matter who you are or what you’re going through, this is a place where you’ll be heard and cared for. We might be strangers on the surface, but underneath we’re just the friends you haven’t met yet.”

 Charity Miles
“Charity Miles is an iPhone and Android app that helps you turn all the miles you walk, run and bike anyway into money for charity.”

The KidsTechWorld team wishes you a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!
We are grateful to be part of such a wonderful community of people looking to enhance their relationship with technology. We are looking forward to seeing you all next year at our KTW event in Basel, Switzerland!
